Guillaume Canet, Mathieu Amalric Are on a Synchronized Swimming Team in Teaser for ‘Sink or Swim’ (Watch)
Please someone distribute this film in the U.S.. Premiering last month at the Cannes Film Festival, Sink or Swim (Le Grand Bain) stars Guillaume Canet, Mathieu Amalric and Benoit Poelvoorde as members of an all-male synchronized swimming team. The film is directed by Gilles Lellouche. You can watch an excerpt below. Sink or Swim will be released theatrically in France in October and in Germany in early 2019, but it doesn’t appear to have U.S. distribution as of yet.
Drawing comparison to The Full Monty, Lellouche’s comedy is about a group of troubled middle-age men who find renewed purpose in life through forming their local pool’s first-ever synchronized swimming team for men. In addition to Canet, Amarlic, and Poelvoorde, the film also stars Jean-Hugues Anglade as an aging rocker, and Virginie Efira as the team’s coach. Alain Attal and Hugo Sélignac served as producers.
Lellouche enlisted Jon Brion to do the music for the film, which was a huge coup. Brion is one our favorite film composers. His credits include Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, Miranda July’s The Future, and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird.
Let’s cross our fingers that some kind of U.S. distributor decides to bank on this buddy comedy.
